Brandy Nālani McDougall announced as the 2023-2025 Hawaiʻi State Poet Laureate, arts education programming for Hawaiʻi public and charter schools, grants, opportunities, calls for artists and more!


Hawaiʻi State Poet Laureate 2023-2025

Brandy Nālani McDougall has been selected as the next Hawaiʻi State Poet Laureate (HSPL) as part of the new collaborative initiative between Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities, State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, and the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System. She will be the second Hawaiʻi State Poet Laureate, succeeding Kealoha (2012-2022).
She will be the Hawaiʻi State Poet Laureate from 2023-2025. Her inaugural event will be Friday, January 13, 2022, 6:00-9:00 pm at the
Hawaiʻi State Art Museum as part of the monthly live music night, The Vibe.
Born and raised on Maui in the ahupuaʻa of Aʻapueo in Kula, McDougall is the author of the poetry collection,
“The Salt-Wind, Ka Makani Paʻakai” (2008). She is also a teacher and mother. Her second poetry collection, “ʻĀina Hānau, Birth Land”, is inspired by her daughters and is forthcoming from the University of Arizona Press in Summer 2023.

Art Bento School Year 2023-2024 Applications Opening Soon
Applications for the Art Bento at HiSAM art education program for Oʻahu public and charter school students grades 2-6 will open later this month. Learn more at sfca.hawaii.gov/artbento.

Artists in the Schools 2023-2024 Information Sessions
Artists in the Schools information sessions are being held online (January 10, February 8, and March 9, 3:00 – 4:00 p.m.). These information sessions are for Hawaiʻi public and charter schools interested in applying. Register on Zoom: AITS Information Sessions.

The SFCA Artists in the Schools program for Hawaiʻi public and charter schools brings qualified, vetted teaching artists
from the SFCA’s Artistic Teaching Partners (ATP) Roster into grades PreK-12 classrooms to provide engaging, creative, and fun learning experiences. The teaching artists connect their lessons to the National Core Arts Standards, and often integrate their art form with other core curriculum areas and/or HĀ principles. Professional Development for Classroom Teachers
Professional Development classes on the fine arts and arts integration are offered several times a year for classroom teachers. State of Hawaiʻi Department of Education (DOE) teachers can sign up to receive Professional Development and Educational Research Institute (PDERI) credit for these classes. The goal is to help teachers gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence necessary to teach standards-based fine arts in their own classrooms.

The classes are coordinated by the
Honolulu Theatre for Youth with funding from the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts through appropriations from the Legislature of the State of Hawaiʻi and the National Endowment for the Arts.

Poetry Out Loud 2023
High school educators: registration is open for Poetry Out Loud 2023! Your students will learn about great poetry through free educational materials and a dynamic recitation competition. Students select, memorize, and recite classic and contemporary poems, helping them master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Registration is open through January 6, 2023. The Hawaiʻi State Finals are scheduled for Sunday, February 26, 2023 at Tenney Theatre in downtown Honolulu.

Poetry Out Loud is a national program presented in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. Honolulu Theatre for Youth partners with the SFCA to implement the program in Hawaiʻi. Learn more on the SFCA website:

SFCA Grants Spotlight


Prince Dance Academy: Oʻahu Schools Grades 2-6
Prince Dance Academy will be on Oʻahu next spring, and is currently looking to book dates at Oʻahu schools (grades 2-6) for an entertaining and educational performance with an interactive lecture this spring. This free one-hour dance performance and lecture with interactive involvement from the student audience, grades two through six, will model the motions of cosmic bodies through dance and help to explain the phenomena of the galaxies.

This program is sponsored by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts and Prince Dance Company. There will be no cost to the schools to receive this program. The Prince Dance Company is currently looking to book dates the last week of March 2023 (3/27 to 3/31). City and County of Honolulu: Non-Profit Relief Program
Honolulu is now accepting applications for $30 million in relief for non-profit organizations that have been adversely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. City and County of Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation now accepting applications for Summer Fun staff
The Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation and Department of Human Resources are now accepting applications for seasonal staff to assist with the 2023 Summer Fun Program. Hourly salaries upwards of $15.56/hour; contracts May 24 – August 4, 2023. Summer Fun is a city-operated, seasonal day camp where children are engaged in learning experiences in a fun and safe environment. Hawaiʻi Council for the Humanities invites you to be a judge for 2023’s Hawaiʻi History Day district fairs
The impact judges have on participants is profound, providing opportunities for students to discuss their work and receive written feedback from an outside resource. Students and teachers often cite the interviews and individual written feedback as highlights of this educational journey. Hawaiʻi State Legislature Public Access Room Trainings – Advocacy, Website, Calendar, and Deadlines
The 2023 session opens Wednesday, January 18, at 10:00 a.m. Register for one of the Public Access Room’s free online training sessions and learn more about advocacy, the Legislature’s website, and the session calendar and its deadlines. Acquisition Award Selection Committees (AASCs) Recent and Upcoming Exhibit Visits
Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) visits continue to provide important support for artists and arts organization venues statewide. Artworks for the SFCA Art in Public Places Collection are selected via an AASC from juried or curated exhibits statewide. An AASC visit must be requested by the exhibition organizers and approved by the SFCA Board of Commissioners. An AASC Request Application can be submitted online at Hawaii.GoSmart.org/active_programs at least 4 months prior to the opening reception of the exhibition.

The galleries are closed during installation of new exhibits, and will re-open February 10, 2023 with an exhibition of recent additions to the Art in Public Places Collection of the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.

Honolulu Jazz School at the State Art Museum
The Honolulu Jazz Music School for students ages 6 and up - including adults - aspiring to learn, develop, and fine-tune their music skills. These free music lessons are led by the multi-talented Dae Han, who leads The Vibe live music events at the museum. Private lessons range from 30 minutes to an hour and are currently offered in drum voice, piano, and music theory. Lessons are currently held Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 1 and 8 p.m. in the Mirror Room on the first floor of the No.1 Capitol District building in downtown Honolulu. Instruments are provided. 2023 ANA Oʻahu Pre-Application Training Session for Nonprofit Organizations
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Native Americans (ANA) is holding a Pre-Application Training Session in-person January 17-18, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Ala Moana Hotel in Honolulu. In this two-day training, they will go through this year's Notices of Funding Opportunity (NOFOS), share tips on how to articulate the strengths of your community-based project effectively, take a deep dive into the evaluation criteria reviewers will use to score your application, and go over the step-by-step process of how to apply. This free, in-person training is funded by the Administration for Native Americans. The ANA Pacific Region Training and Technical Assistance Center will be hosting and facilitating this training. Decisions about grants, artwork purchases, and more are made by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) Board of Commissioners. Meetings are currently being held virtually on Zoom, and the public is invited to attend. Appointed by the state governor, the Board of Commissioners oversees the Executive Director, provides input, and approves spending. Commissioners are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their duties.
Individuals may submit written testimony on posted agenda items in advance of the meeting via email to

Hawaii State Art Museum

The Hawai'i State Art Museum is dedicated to presenting the largest and finest collection of works by Hawai'i artists that celebrate the diverse artistic and cultural legacy of Hawai'i.

OUR MISSION

HSFCA funding is provided by the State of Hawai`i and the National Endowment for the Arts. The HSFCA is administratively attached to the Department of Accounting and General Services.

HOURS:
The musuem is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Closed State and Federal Holdays. Always free admission. For pre-recorded information call 586-0900.
