Hawaii State Library Oahu Main Branch Reopens

The Hawaii State Public Library System is pleased to announce that our main branch, the Hawaii State Library, will reopen its doors to the public on Monday, February 28th, 2022.

When the library was not fully open to the public, the staff had been providing continued statewide information services via telephone and email, managing collections, filling thousands of hold requests, and providing door services. Hawaii State Library staff also provided critical assistance to the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations with processing the deluge of unemployment claims.

When the library opens on Monday, all library users will be able to browse for materials, use public Internet computers for up to two (2) 60-minute sessions per day, access free wi-fi, pick up holds, use printers and copiers, get reference and research assistance and enjoy the beauty of this historic building.

In keeping with current State health mandates, patrons and visitors (12 years and older) must:

  • present proof of vaccination or a negative COVID test issued within the last 72 hours;
  • wear a mask while indoors;
  • practice physical distancing;
  • follow basic guidelines for being safe--staying at home if you are sick, washing hands, and using hand sanitizer.

Public service hours will be:

Monday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tuesday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Wednesday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Thursday: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Friday: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Sunday: Closed

"We are so grateful to our patrons for your patience and support during this extended closure. We cannot wait to welcome you all back into our flagship branch," said State Librarian, Stacey Aldrich.

The Hawaii State Library is located at 478 South King Street and also serves the nearby communities of Kakaako, Ala Moana, Makiki, Chinatown, and downtown Honolulu. For more information call 808-586-3500.
