SFCA Distribution of CARES Act Relief Fund
The Hawai‘i State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA), with support from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act has developed a relief grant to assist eligible non-profit arts organizations across the state of Hawai‘i impacted by COVID-19.

CARES Act Relief Fund is a one-time grant open to those non-profit organizations that have been reviewed and recommended for award by the SFCA through its Biennium Grant FY2020 and FY2021 panels. Qualifying organizations will be notified individually and will receive a login to the application.

The entire $427,500 received from the National Endowment for the Arts through the CARES Act will be distributed by the SFCA to qualifying nonprofit arts organizations throughout the state of Hawai‘i.  Organizations must be able to provide evidence of direct financial impact due to COVID-19, which may include but are not limited to:

1)Complying with the social distancing mandate resulting in a reduction in capacity to allow for audience proximity, technology purchases to support online content and remote work for staff.
2)Reduction in 2020 revenue as the result of loss of income or opportunities (program, scheduled event, ticket sales, admissions, rental fees, fundraising). For the purpose of calculating a %, organizations will be reporting loss between March 1 and May 30, 2020.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act funds are intended to help save jobs in the arts sector and keep the doors open to the thousands of organizations that add value to America’s economy and the creative life of our communities. Funding must be related to:
  • Direct Costs: Essential staff salaries
  • Direct Costs: Fees for artists and contractual personnel
  • Direct Costs: Facilities- rent, mortgage, utilities, equipment, information technology, security, insurance, building maintenance, cleaning services, other costs incurred.

CARES Act Relief Grants are also available to not-for-profit organizations through the
Hawai‘i Council for the Humanities, the Western States Arts Federation (WESTAF) and the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

COVID-19 Resources and Information for Artists and Arts/Culture Organizations

The SFCA COVID-19 Information and Resources page is a collection of resources that may be relevant to you and/or the artists, arts professionals, and organizations with whom you work. We will continue to update this page for as long as it may be useful. Recent additions to the page include unemployment insurance information for artists and a link to the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation's COVID-19 Resources for the Performing Arts.

Nonprofit Organizations: Help Hawai‘i Get Funding for COVID-19 Relief
The National Endowment for the Arts together with Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit for advancing the arts, have created a survey to assess the economic impact of COVID-19 on nonprofits arts organizations. We urge all Hawai‘i nonprofit arts organizations to participate, so the virus’ effect on our state’s arts infrastructure can be documented.

Your answers are critically important. They create the data-backed case for advocacy to include the arts in emergency relief funding that might be allocated at the federal or state levels.

Take the five-minute survey online at
    AFTA COVID-19 Arts Impact Survey.

    Arts Activities and Resources Page

    Arts Education

    Artists in the Schools
The Artists in the Schools (AITS) program for State of Hawai‘i Department of Education (DOE) schools, grades K-12, is currently open for school applications. All Hawai‘i public and charter schools are eligible to apply. The deadline has been extended to Tuesday, May 26, 2020; please contact SFCA Arts Program Specialist Danica "Nikki" Rosengren (telephone: 808-586-0768 or email: danica.rosengren@hawaii.gov) with any questions. AITS arts residency grants provide engaging, creative and fun learning experiences based on the Fine Arts standards for all grade levels, through residencies with qualified trained teaching artists from the Artistic Teaching Partners (ATP) Roster. Many of these teaching artists integrate their art form with other core curriculum areas, such as language arts, math, social studies, and science, meeting both Fine Arts and other core standards.

Poetry Out Loud Celebrates the 2020 Champions
The 2020 Poetry Out Loud national finals were cancelled due to COVID-19, and several state finals were either cancelled or held virtually. Poetry Out Loud will honor both the students who won their state Poetry Out Loud competition (state champions) as well as students who advanced to the state finals in states that were unable to hold a competition.

    In the coming weeks,
videos of these students reciting a selection of poems from the Poetry Out Loud anthology will be released through arts.gov and poetryoutloud.org as well as on Twitter.

“From analyzing poems to spending hours memorizing and honing their recitations, we know the extraordinary amount of hard work and personal effort that each student put into the program,” said Mary Anne Carter, chairman of the National Endowment for the Arts. “While we are disappointed not to have a national finals competition this year, we look forward to sharing students’ recitations through this video project and the resumption of the competition next school year.”
