  • Oahu Motorists Urged To Follow Existing Rules For Personalized License Plates

O‘ahu motorists urged to follow existing rules for personalized license plates

HONOLULU - O‘ahu motorists are being reminded about existing rules for personalized Hawai'i license plates.

The reminder coincides with a 23% decrease last year in requests for personalized plates in the City and County of Honolulu.

The city’s Motor Vehicle Registration Branch will reject applications that violate the existing rules, including letter and number combinations that are profane, encourage violence, or make sexual references.

“With license plates still being a very visible aspect of any vehicle, our focus remains on continuing to apply clear, objective and reasonable guidelines for the number and letter combinations in applications we receive for personalized license plates,” said Department of Customer Services Director Kim Hashiro, whose oversight responsibilities include motor vehicle registration.

The latest reminder about existing rules follows a $35 statewide increase in the fee for personalized license plates, which are now $60 annually in addition to all other motor vehicle licensing fees and taxes.
