Karen Ewald Appointed SFCA Executive Director
The SFCA Board of Commissioners has officially appointed Karen Ewald as SFCA Executive Director, effective September 20, 2023. Ewald is contracted to serve a 5-year term.

Art in Public Places Program

Artworks dedicated at Mauka Terminal, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport
Commissioned works of art for the new Mauka Terminal at the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (Honolulu) have been completed. Flooring motifs by Satoru Abe and sculptures by Sean Browne, Doug Young, and Mark Chai complete the collective effort to curate a terminal for the future with a contemporary Hawaiian sense of place reflecting the ingenuity of Hawaiian culture. SFCA Board of Commissioners approves non-state loan requests for artworks by Toshiko Takaezu, Bernice Akamine, and Marcia Morse
The SFCA board has approved loans of artworks from the SFCA Art in Public Places Collection to the Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum, the Queensland Art Gallery, and the Maui Arts and Cultural Center.
•The Isamu Noguchi Foundation and Garden Museum is organizing an expansive traveling retrospective, “Toshiko Takaezu: Garden of Forms” showcasing pioneering artist Toshiko Takaezu. The requested pieces are the “Peacock Rug” fiber art, “Lava II” acrylic on canvas painting, and “Shiro Momo” porcelain sculpture.
•The Queensland Art Gallery has an upcoming exhibition, “The 11th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art” and has requested two works by Bernice Akamine, “Kapa Moe: Hae Hawaii” kapa and “The Queen’s Quilt” kapa.
•The Maui Arts and Cultural Center’s upcoming exhibition “Marcia Morse & George Woollard” will showcase significant bodies of their work and highlight their significant contributions to Hawaiʻi’s art community. The requested pieces by Morse are “Paper Doors, Nightingale Floors I” (handmade paper construction), “Pod” (handmade paper and maidenhair fern), “Quiet Rain” (mixed media sculpture), and “Women in Black: Tears Like Rain” (fiber and mixed media sculpture).

All galleries are climate-controlled with trained security. Comprehensive wall-to-wall fine art insurance will be provided by all institutions throughout the run of the loan, and the institutions will cover transportation, packing, and return costs. Transportation, installation, facilities, and security will conform to the highest industry standards.

SFCA Arts Education Programs

Call for student artists: 2024 Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Student Art Awards Competition and Exhibition
Submissions now open for the 61st Annual Hawaiʻi Regional Scholastic Student Art Awards! Please help us get the word out to Hawaiʻi students, teachers, and schools. This art competition is open to all state of Hawaiʻi students (public, charter, home, and private) grades 7-12 (ages 13+). Winning entries will be displayed at the Hawaiʻi State Art Museum. SFCA Grantee Spotlight: Lahaina Arts Guild continues keiki art classes

Bill Smith (Lahaina Arts Guild Director) sent the SFCA an update on their Keiki Art classes: “We are back in action with our Lahaina westside Keiki Art classes. It is remarkable seeing the joy and relief on the faces of the kids as well as the parents. A smaller beginning, but of enormous impact. Kirk, DeAna and Zoe are doing an incredible job finding venues, storing art supplies and teaching our westside kids. We currently have two classes a week at the Sheraton and about 20 children five days this week at the church in Honokowai.”

The historic Old Lahaina Courthouse that housed the guild was destroyed in the Lahaina fire in August. Guild members are also planning to work with students from the Sacred Hears Mission Church and King Kamehameha III Elementary School; both school campuses were heavily damaged during the fire.

SFCA Grantee Spotlight: Maui Academy of Performing Arts offering free classes to Maui families impacted by fires


The Maui Academy of Performing Arts (MAPA) will be providing free classes at West Maui hotels for survivors of all ages, in partnership with the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Health, Maui Arts and Cultural Center, and the SFCA. SFCA Grantee Spotlight: short film by Maui teens world premieres at film festival

"VIRAL", a short film created by 2022 SFCA American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) grantee Stefan Schaefer and five Maui students, premieres October 6-8th at the 28th Annual H.P. Lovecraft Film Festival in Portland, Oregon. It also screens in Mobile, Alabama, November 3-5th. The 18-minute film description: "With dreams of quick fame and fortune, five Maui teens set out to create a viral video based on ancient Hawaiian mythology. It doesn't go as planned." Schaefer reports, “Some of these teens may end up as professional actors, or work in the entertainment business as writers, directors, or technicians. They certainly have the aptitude. However, if they don’t, I think they all come away from this experience with skills and knowledge that are transferable to other work and life settings. We all learned about collaboration, respecting one another’s opinions, the joy and struggle of the generative/artistic process, and that creating something that you can be proud of takes time, dedication, and focus." 2023 Legislative Grants-in-Aid Update
The SFCA is administering four Hawaiʻi State Legislature Grants-In-Aid for the fiscal year 2024 (July 2023 – June 2024). The grants provide operating support for programs servicing title 1 schools and underserved and rural communities. Grantees: Ballet Hawaii, Honolulu Theatre for Youth, Oahu Choral Society, and Lanai Academy of Performing Arts. The state legislature awarded 188 grants this year, in amounts ranging from $20,000 to $1 million. •The Hawaiʻi International Film Festival (HIFF) is seeking volunteers for the fall HIFF festival to assist with various activities including tech and projection booth assistants, English interpreters (Korean, Japanese, Cantonese, Mandarin), and info booth attendants and ushers. •Call for Artists: Honolulu Mayor’s Office on Culture and the Arts (MOCA). ‘Ewa Mahiko District Park Gymnasium The City and County of Honolulu Commission on Culture and the Arts desires to commission a work of art for the ‘Ewa Mahiko District Park Gymnasium (91-1205 Renton Rd, ‘Ewa Beach, O‘ahu, Hawai‘i, 96706). One location has been designated to receive art. This Request for Qualifications is open to all artists, or artist teams, qualified to work for the City and County of Honolulu. •FY2024 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Marine Debris Removal funding supports impactful, large marine debris removal projects. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations and commercial (for-profit) organizations with expertise in a field related to marine debris. This funding opportunity requires a Letter of Intent to be submitted before a full proposal can be submitted, due October 27, 2023. •Institute of Museum and Library Services grants
◦Native American/Native Hawaiian Museum Services (2024) grants supports organizations that primarily serve and represent Native Hawaiians in sustaining heritage, culture, and knowledge through exhibitions, educational services and programming, workforce professional development, organizational capacity building, and collections stewardship. (Estimated application deadline is November 25, 2023). ◦Inspire! Grants for Small Museums is a special initiative of the Museums for America program. It is designed to support small museums of all disciplines in project-based efforts to serve the public through exhibitions, educational/interpretive programs, digital learning resources, policy development and institutional planning, technology enhancements, professional development, community outreach, audience development, and/or collections management, curation, care, and conservation. HiSAM rebranded as Capitol Modern
The free, contemporary public art gallery of Hawai‘i has evolved and rebranded, debuting a new name, creative gathering spaces and calendar of events. Formerly called the Hawai‘i State Art Museum (HISAM), the name Capitol Modern is meant to better reflect its location in Honolulu’s historic Capitol District and the vibrant modern art experience people have come to love.

Capitol Modern is eager for the public to experience this next chapter in their evolution as the people’s museum, and the opportunity to reach diverse audiences in all Hawai‘i communities.

Denby Fawcett: The State Art Museum Gets Rebranded As Capitol Modern
Honolulu Civil Beat: “Omitting ‘Museum’ was intentional, since we are at present a small gallery and a versatile space that is constantly changing and evolving — we are also so much more than just a museum,” said Ewald. Ewald said that for many young people, the word “museum” connotes a stuffy, formal place where visitors are required to enter speaking only in hushed tones out of respect for the art. She said the goal instead is to be perceived as an exciting meeting place for people of different backgrounds and interests. SFCA Board approves purchase of twenty-one artworks for Art in Public Places Collection
On September 20, 2023, the SFCA Board of Commissioners approved the acquisition of twenty-one artworks for the SFCA Art in Public Places Collection. All of the works were nominated by committees visiting Hawaiʻi exhibitions. Full list on the SFCA news page: sfca.hawaii.gov/art-in-public-places-collection-recent-additions-september-2023.

Acquisitions for fiscal year 2023 and fiscal year 2024 (so far) are posted to the SFCA website: sfca.hawaii.gov/art-in-public-places-program/#recent-adds.

Artworks for the SFCA Art in Public Places Collection are selected via an Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) from juried or curated exhibits statewide. An AASC visit must be requested by the exhibition organizers and approved by the SFCA Board of Commissioners. An AASC Request Application can be submitted online at Hawaii.GoSmart.org/active_programs at least 4 months prior to the opening reception of the exhibition. You will need to be logged in to Hawaii.GoSmart.org to view the application page.

Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) visits continue to provide important support for artists and arts organization venues statewide. The SFCA Board of Commissioners has approved Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) visits to these exhibits:  
•“Portal 2 @ Firehouse Gallery”, Firehouse Gallery at the Waimea Arts Council, (Kamuela, Hawaiʻi Island). November 4 - December 24, 2023.
•“Mai Nā Kūpuna Mai” at The Art Gallery, University of Hawaiʻi-Mānoa (Honolulu, Oʻahu). November 19, 2023 - February 11, 2024.
•“Hui Noʻeau 2024 Annual Juried Exhibition”, Hui Noʻeau Visual Arts Center (Makawao, Maui). January 12 - February 16, 2024.

Decisions about grants, artwork purchases, and more are made by the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts (SFCA) Board of Commissioners. Meetings are currently being held virtually on Zoom, and the public is invited to attend. Appointed by the state governor, the Board of Commissioners oversees the Executive Director, provides input, and approves spending. Commissioners are volunteers and do not receive compensation for their duties.

Individuals may submit written testimony on posted agenda items in advance of the meeting via email to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov or by mail addressed to the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, 250 South Hotel Street, 2nd Floor, Honolulu, HI 96813. Individuals interested in signing up to provide oral testimony on posted agenda items at the meeting may submit their name, email, and phone number to HawaiiSFCA@hawaii.gov. Individuals may provide oral testimony at the meeting via the above-listed video conferencing link or by calling the above listed telephone number. Testimony presented during the meeting will be limited to three minutes each.
Agenda items for General Meetings may include approval of artwork acquisition recommendations and Acquisition Award Selection Committee (AASC) art exhibit visit recommendations.
